Course Overview

This 12-month online course equips foreigners in Thailand with essential media and communication skills for effective cross-cultural interactions. It was designed by a team of researchers at the Center of Excellence in Communication Innovation at The Faculty of Communication Arts, Chulalongkorn University. Through six comprehensive modules, learners gain knowledge of Thai social, cultural, and communication contexts, develop basic Thai language proficiency, and learn to adapt their communication style to various Thai settings.

Modules cover fundamentals of Thai media, cross-cultural communication, digital and social media, communication for tourism and business, negotiation and conflict resolution, and a practical communication project. Learners engage in interactive online activities, discussions, and simulations, with periodic in-class workshops and presentations.

Continuous authentic assessment includes participation, quizzes, and a final project. Successful completion requires meeting specified criteria. The course is open to English-proficient foreign nationals aged 18+ with no prior communication or Thai language experience.

Total course fee is 26,500 THB, including a 1,500 THB application fee for document review and competency assessment, and a 25,000 THB enrollment fee covering tuition, platform access, and activities. Scholarships are available for outstanding academic performance and financial need.

Learners who complete the course and choose to participate in the onsite activities will be able to analyze Thai communication contexts, communicate effectively in basic Thai, select appropriate media channels, execute communication projects, and apply skills for successful life and work in Thailand.

Most, if not all, videos will last approximately 4-7 minutes. This will be followed by online quizzes, worksheets, discussions, etc., to ensure that the students spend at least 25 hours per week on learning.

Before applying, ensure you meet the following criteria:

  • Foreign or Thai national aged 18 or above

  • Completed high school education or equivalent

  • Proficiency in English (IELTS 5.5 or equivalent e.g. TOEFL, TOEIC, CUTEP, TUGET, Letter of Confirmation of Your English from a credible individual or organization)

  • Interested in developing communication skills in Thai context

  • Ready for online learning and collaboration

  • No prior communication or Thai language knowledge required

Gather the following documents in English:

  1. Passport copy (valid for at least 6 months) or Thai Identity card copy

  2. A recent 1-inch photo (taken within the last 6 months)

  3. High school diploma or equivalent

  • Applications are sorted into three groups:

    • Group A: Complete and satisfactory

    • Group B: Incomplete or unsatisfactory

    • Group C: Insufficient English proficiency

  • Learner support team will follow up on missing documents or clarifications

  • Applicants with insufficient English proficiency may be invited for an online assessment or moved to Group C for pre-sessional support course

  • Application results will be sent via email within by 5 working days after review

  • Successful applicants must confirm their enrollment and pay the 25,000 THB enrollment fee within the specified deadline

Obtaining a Letter of Confirmation

A Letter of Confirmation is an official document issued by the educational institution confirming your enrollment in the course. It is a crucial requirement for your Non-Immigrant Education (ED) visa application. Follow these steps to obtain your Letter of Confirmation:

Step 1: Complete Course Enrollment

  1. Successfully complete the course application process and receive an offer of admission

  2. Accept the offer of admission by paying the required enrollment fee within the specified deadline

Course Completion 

To successfully complete the course and receive a certificate, learners must fulfill the following requirements:

  • View all video lectures, read all assigned materials, and complete all module exercises and assessments

  • Achieve a minimum score of 60% in each module's assessments

2. Participation in Online Discussions

  • Actively participate in online forum discussions for each module

  • Post at least one original comment or question per discussion topic

  • Respond to at least two posts from peers per discussion topic

  • Demonstrate thoughtful and respectful engagement with the course content and peer contributions

3. Completion of Assignments

  • Complete all individual and group assignments for each module

  • Submit assignments by the specified deadlines

  • Achieve a minimum score of 60% on each assignment

4. Attendance in In-Class Sessions

  • Choose to attend scheduled in-class sessions, including:

    • Presentations

  • Actively participate in in-class activities and discussions

  • Inform the instructor in advance if unable to attend a chosen session due to unforeseen circumstances

5. Completion of Capstone Project

  • Successfully complete the Communication Project in the Thai Context (Module 6)

  • Develop and execute a practical communication project addressing a real-world challenge in the Thai context

  • Present the project findings and outcomes to peers and instructors

  • Achieve a minimum score of 60% on the capstone project

6. Overall Course Assessment

  • Achieve an overall course assessment of at least 60%, calculated as follows:

    • Module assessments: 30%

    • Participation in online discussions: 10%

    • Assignments: 20%

    • Attendance and participation in in-class sessions: 10%

    • Capstone project: 30%

 

Learners who meet all the above requirements will be eligible to receive a course completion certificate. The certificate will be issued electronically within 30 days of the course end date.

Please note that learners who do not meet the minimum requirements for course completion will not receive a certificate. However, they may be eligible to retake specific modules or assignments to improve their scores and fulfill the completion criteria within 30 days.​​​

Optional Activities 

Optional activities in Scenario that 800 students enroll the course that starts in January and ends in December. The frequency is designed to ensure that each student could choose to attend at least one session in the following distinct five types of activities.

  • Objective: To expose students to Thai media organizations and cultural sites, helping them understand the local media landscape and cultural context

  • Frequency: approx. Bi-Monthly (ex. Jan, Mar, May, Jul, Sep, Nov)

  • Duration: Half-day or full-day, depending on the location
